National Nonprofit Day is acknowledged on August 17th each year to
recognize nonprofit organizations’ ongoing efforts to serve the local
community.
It’s also a day to honor the valuable contributions of nonprofit organizations
and the people behind them.
“In 2025, this observance reminds us of the vital role nonprofits play in
strengthening communities, advocating for change, and providing essential
services where they are needed most.”

Why National Nonprofit Day Matters
Nonprofit organizations are the heart of service and kindness and
compassion. From feeding the hungry, protecting the environment, and
supporting the arts, nonprofits impact every aspect of our lives.
Nonprofits contribute to the economy and society. They provide jobs, build
connections, and often address issues that might otherwise go overlooked.

History of National Non-Profits Day
Sherita J Herring, an author and respected speaker, launched National
Nonprofits Day. The goal was to educate and empower people to be the
change they want to see in the world.
There are 1.5 million registered organizations in the United States. These
organizations play a vital role in community development by offering services
such as food banks, affordable housing and medical Care.
